We’re excited to announce the release of iMazing 3.2 for macOS, a free update that continues to expand iMazing 3's powerful device management capabilities. This release introduces support for Apple Watch, compatibility with the 2025 iPad lineup, and includes multiple enhancements and fixes.

This new version also restores app downloads from the App Store after Apple's server changes. We took the opportunity to add several new features to iMazing App Managment that enhance how users can manage iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS apps on their Mac through iMazing. These enhancements include app version history viewing, CSV file exports of app lists, the ability to pause and resume failed downloads, and other improvements.

Also for Apple admins and business users, we are extremely happy to announce iMazing Profile Editor 2, the free, totally redesigned app that brings smarter workflows and introduces an all new Total App Setup tool.
Discover what iMazing Profile Editor 2 has to offer in this dedicated release post.

View detailed device information

Access storage containers for:

File sharing-enabled apps

Apps running in development mode

Uninstall apps from the Watch

Install configuration profiles

Export:

Improved: app management is now more powerful and flexible than ever. You can now explore app version history, export full app lists to CSV for auditing or inventory, authenticate Apple accounts with SMS-based 2FA, and resume interrupted downloads without starting over.

We’re excited to announce the general release of iMazing Profile Editor 2 for macOS, a major update to our free app for creating, editing, and signing configuration profiles for Apple platforms.

At the heart of this release is Total App Setup, a powerful new feature designed to streamline a notably tedious task in Apple IT: configuring macOS app permissions.

Traditionally, configuring payloads such as Privacy Preferences Policy Control (PPPC) meant digging through documentation, running command-line tools, and relying on trial and error.

Total App Setup changes that completely. It analyzes a selected app bundle and generates the necessary settings in a configuration profile that works with any MDM — reducing the process to just seconds.

But it doesn’t stop at PPPC. Total App Setup also auto-configures Notifications, Login Items, and Associated Domains payloads based on the app’s requirements. When available, it even suggests app domain settings payloads to help kickstart user-settings configuration.

Alongside Total App Setup, iMazing Profile Editor 2 also brings a number of additional handy new features:

Support for visionOS configuration profiles

The ability to import payloads from plist files or other profiles

A new option to export payloads to scripts for integration into custom workflows

Support for MCX-style payloads, a feature frequently requested by organizations using Jamf

For macOS Today - Windows Coming Soon

iMazing Profile Editor 2 is available now for macOS. While Total App Setup is exclusive to macOS, Windows users can look forward to version 2 enhancements too as we’re already working on bringing them to the platform.

A Free App - No Limitations or Registration

iMazing Profile Editor 2 remains completely free with no registration required. It’s trusted by Apple admins around the world and is now more powerful than ever. Download it today to discover the all-new Total App Setup, and to upgrade your Apple device configuration workflows.

We are thrilled to share news with the Apple device management community today regarding the ProfileManifests open-source project. A core part of iMazing Profile Editor from its release, the project provides a vast preference catalog not only for Apple configuration domains but also for third-party apps.

Originally created by Erik Berglund as a supporting project for his ProfileCreator app, ProfileManifests has taken on a life of its own under the leadership of AP Orlebeke, surpassing its parent project in reach and community involvement.

With significant contributions from community member Kevin M. Cox, our own team, and many other dedicated contributors, the project has grown to include thousands of settings across 243 manifests, all of which are continuously maintained and kept up-to-date.

Today we are announcing that ProfileManifests is leaving the ProfileCreator GitHub organization and is moving to its own dedicated home under a new organization bearing its name. The new ProfileManifests organization is owned and managed in collaboration between us, Kevin, and AP.

This means that the team behind ProfileManifests will remain unchanged, but the move to a dedicated organization will open the door to an exciting new future, and will allow us to:

Simplify contributions: We’ll be revamping the wikis and contribution guidelines to make it easier than ever to get involved.

Encourage collaboration from app developers: We love seeing app developers contribute manifests for their apps, and we’ll strive to make this the norm.

Innovate on the manifest format: We plan to refresh the manifest format and introduce new features, accommodating new Apple product lines and incorporating feedback from users, while ensuring compatibility for projects that rely on the current format.

ProfileManifests is already the most comprehensive Apple device management catalog out there, but with your help it can become even better.

We invite you to be part of this new chapter, whether as a user or as a contributor. You can join the discussion on the
#profilemanifests
channel in the Mac Admins Slack, or visit the project’s new home at https://github.com/ProfileManifests/ProfileManifests/.

Now, this was just a brief run-through, but if you're interested in hearing more, an upcoming Mac Admins Podcast episode will be featuring a discussion about ProfileManifests with hosts Tom Bridge and Becky Scott so stay tuned for that.

Thanks for making up an incredible community – it's a privilege to be a part of it.

WWDC24 Wrap Up & Thoughts on Apple Intelligence

We stated last year was a pivotal moment, with Apple introducing new hardware and, in the process, a new computing paradigm: Spatial Computing.

This year is likely to be even more significant due to Apple's announcement and system-wide adoption of AI, cleverly rebranded as Apple Intelligence, in a move typical of Apple.

Just as the iPod revolutionized music by bringing dematerialized content to the masses, this year's announcement aims to make AI accessible to everyone, or "The Rest of Us," as Apple likes to call it.

AI is integrated across all platforms: iOS, iPadOS, and macOS and materialized in productive applications like Writing Tools that improve writing, adapt tone in any input field and summarize long texts. It is also used in more creative features, like Genmojis that creates custom emojis and Image Playground, which is able to generate pictures from descriptive words. All these features are embedded right into the operating system, greatly enhancing the accessibility of Artificial Intelligence.

Siri is getting a big (and needed) upgrade, enhanced with natural language understanding, contextual memory, and typed prompts. But this is not limited to just Siri, Apple Intelligence features an on-device semantic index for personal context that can organize and surface information from across apps and feed generative models to execute actions.

Requests to Apple Intelligence undergo an evaluation for on-device processing. If additional power is required, they are processed on Apple servers using Private Cloud Compute, which maintains user privacy. This data is not stored or accessible to Apple, and only used for user requests. Even further, Apple Intelligence can expand to other artificial intelligence tools form more complex queries that require broader knowledge or specialized expertise, and such models will be gradually integrated. The first one that will be available is the pioneer and market leader: ChatGPT from OpenAI.

These features, when combined, are telltale signs of the significant changes AI is introducing to computing and its impending impact on our lives. In typical Apple fashion, the software engineers have been working on the optimal integration of this technology, with a central focus on the user and their privacy, thereby prioritizing the user experience.

Being in Cupertino, interacting with fellow developers, and experiencing the town's enthusiasm is always enjoyable. And this year the excitement around the wealth of AI features and the depth of their integration has certainly impressed those in attendance.

And the highlight of this year, for our team, was once again attending The Talk Show Live in San Jose. If you aren’t familiar with the show, Daring Fireball’s columnist John Gruber hosts top Apple executives and interviews them about the new things just shown during the WWDC Keynote. This year again Craig Federighi was drawing all the attention, but we had our minute, having had the privilege of being the premier sponsor!

Let’s Discuss our Device-Based License Model

Why we abandoned computer-based licensing

We’ve had a few comments about iMazing’s device-based perpetual licensing model that we offer as an alternative to a renewable subscription license. This post intends to clarify any misunderstanding that could arise as to what it is, how it compares to other models, and what the benefits are of such an offering.

Why are we doing this

We don’t want to charge for updates, retain upgrades, or interfere with our maintenance work and release cycle. We want iMazing users to use the latest and greatest version of the software, all the time, at no extra cost.

iMazing is also continually evolving. With version 3, iMazing has been re-architected as a platform that will allow us to introduce numerous new features in the upcoming months and years. This progress would not be possible without our device-based licensing model.

Why not offer just a subscription

Software companies have been transitioning to subscription licensing to ensure they have the resources to support the regular updates that increasingly complex software depends on. This is especially the case for us, given iMazing's long history and broad support for devices, platforms, and operating systems. The traditional paid-upgrade model, dependent on continuous customer acquisition, simply isn't sustainable.

iMazing's device-based licensing enables us to provide our customers with two value propositions:

A subscription with a lower initial cost and a bit of flexibility, but that requires an annual payment.

A perpetual license that is valid for the life of the Apple mobile device, but cannot be transferred to another device.

With an iMazing subscription, a device that was previously linked to your license but is not connected for 9 months is automatically removed from your license, allowing a new one to be linked. This provides flexibility to individuals and families who routinely add or rotate devices.

An iMazing perpetual license does not support device unlinks, but only requires a one-time payment that provides you access to all iMazing updates for the life of the device. If you typically keep devices for 2 or more years, our perpetual license is probably the best choice for you. With our perpetual license, you also gain free lifetime support by email.

Why devices instead of computers?

We introduced iMazing’s device-based licensing model in late 2020 after considering all the variables that could continue to support our business while doing away with paid upgrades.

We feel this is the best indicator of usage and allows our more budget-minded users who hang on to their devices for many years to use iMazing without an annual fee.

Device-based licensing also allows you to use your licensed device with any computer running iMazing, addressing a common pain point among users who may have different computers at different locations but always have their iPhone or iPad with them.

What this means for you

When you want to get the most out of iMazing and unlock all features, you have two choices:

Buy a subscription
This option is designed for people that have many devices, or rotate them often, like getting each year newly released iPhone or adding new iPads to their setup.

One-time purchase
This is the best option for people who hang on to a device longer. The license is tied to the very device for its entire lifetime and can’t be reallocated. Packs of licenses are available at a discount if a device is planned to be renewed, and more device slots can be added anytime.

A few last words…

We're incredibly grateful for the support our customers have given us for more than 15 years, and hope this post clarifies the reason and intentions behind iMazing's licensing shift in 2020.

Change is not always comfortable, but adaptation is absolutely necessary to ensure that we can continue to develop the best iPhone manager on the planet for years to come.

Even just a decade ago, the software industry was ripe with independent firms that developed quality titles. The economics of the industry has resulted in massive consolidation and a great reduction in companies such as ours.

We understand how important people's devices are to them, especially the data contained on them, and are proud to reassure our customers that we remain fiercely independent, with no external funding nor anyone to answer to other than our customers. It’s to that end that we wanted to assure you that we appreciate your feedback, and wanted to share this additional information with you.

Your friends in Switzerland,
the iMazing team

iMazing 3 License Facts

All updates and upgrades are free.

iMazing can be installed on any number of computers, Mac or PC.

If a device is lost or stolen, contact us so its replacement can inherit the Device license.

Please don't forget iMazing's free features are free for everyone! This includes device backups and browsing the backups, so if you are using iMazing 3 to migrate devices, only the new device needs a license, not the old one.

And don’t miss other must-have Free features, like Quick Transfer!

We are excited to announce the release of iMazing 3.0, the next-generation of our flagship software for managing iPhones and other Apple mobile devices from a Mac or Windows PC.

Discover iMazing 3 ➜

iMazing 3 has been entirely redesigned and re-engineered, with a brand new interface and revamped user experience that builds on the core features that have made iMazing the industry standard for years:

Flexible local backup options with snapshots support ➜

File and media transfers to or from devices ➜

iMessage, SMS, and WhatsApp message export ➜

Powerful tools for businesses to manage and provision their devices ➜

The last decade has seen considerable changes to hardware, operating systems, and even development languages. To continue to deliver the quality and future capabilities we envision, iMazing needed a complete refactoring of both the interface, and the underlying code.

Moreover, we wanted to push further and deliver the best possible experience for an iPhone management software. For example, iMazing 3’s new Discover section allows casual users to easily find their way and perform any action quickly and easily. At the same time, the new Tools section gathers all the power features that an increasing number of business customers enjoy.

iMazing 3 has been redesigned for the future, and we will regularly be delivering updates that add new capabilities and improve existing ones. These updates will be provided at no cost to iMazing 3 license holders.

iMazing 2 customers who purchased a personal license after October 20, 2020 can upgrade to iMazing 3 at no charge, while older iMazing users can purchase a new license at discount (as much as 50% off, check here).

Hello iPhone 15 + iOS/iPadOS 17

Fresh on the heels of Apple's newest iPhones and iOS/iPadOS releases, we've released iMazing 2.17.10 for optimal compatibility, as well as a new iMazing 3 beta for macOS.

iPhone 15 Pro & USB-C: 3-5x faster for iMazing

We spent the weekend running the iPhone 15 Pro through a series of tests, as this release delivers the biggest jump in cable throughput ever. When connected via a full-speed (10 Gbps) USB-C cable as compared to the previous Lightning cable:

iMazing backups and restores are 3x faster

iMazing file transfers are 5x faster (with large files)

Some observations and notes:

Although Lightning cables are limited to 480 Mbps and USB-C in the iPhone Pro tops out at 10 Gbps, real world performance is no where near the 20x implied by the baseline numbers, especially when working with thousands of small files, as backup and restore operations do.

Disappointingly, the iPhone 15 Pro ships with a USB-C cable that's limited to USB 2 data rates, just like Lightning (480 Mbps). This is the same cable that has been shipping with the USB-C equipped iPad Pro for some time now, and it means you won't see any USB-C performance benefit if you connect your iPhone with that cable.

In order to take advantage of 10 Gbps USB-C transfers, you will need to purchase a third-party cable that supports data higher transfer speeds. We've personally been using Rixmie's short USB-C cable, which costs less than $10 from Amazon in the U.S.

iPhone 15 models (non-Pro) are limited to USB 2 data speeds no matter what kind of cable is used, since the necessary controller that supports 10 Gbps USB-C is part of the A17 Pro chip, exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

macOS users: To check the speed of your USB connection:

Open the System Information app (
/Applications/Utilities
)

Then select USB in the sidebar

Then select your iPhone from the USB tree and check what it says under Speed:

iPhone 15 + 15 Pro: Update iOS to 17.0.2 first!

Apple's newest iPhones ship with a bug that out of the box can cause problems when transferring data from an old device, even potentially causing a boot loop that requires the iPhone to be put in Recovery or DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode to recover:

iPhone 15 setup bug leads to Apple logo of death, iOS 17.0.2 update required (9to5Mac)

Warning: Update Your iPhone 15 to iOS 17.0.2 Before Transferring Data From Another iPhone (MacRumors)

iOS 17 upgrade bug: What to do if you get stuck on the Apple logo during iPhone 15 setup (9to5Mac)

If you find your new phone requires such attention, iMazing can help you out. See our guides:

Put an iPhone or iPad into Recovery or DFU mode

Reinstall or restore iOS on a malfunctioning iPhone or iPad.

iMazing can also be used to transfer data from your old device to your new iPhone 15, although we happily acknowledge that Apple's wireless migration assistant has come a long way in recent years, and when it works, it's usually fast and reliable.

We are thrilled to announce that Mac users interested in sampling the future of Apple mobile device management can now test drive iMazing 3 beta!

Download iMazing 3 (Final)

iMazing 3 represents a significant refactoring of the software's architecture, with a wonderful new user experience designed to make it faster and easier for our users to get what they need out of (or in to) their iPhone, iPad, or iPod. The new iMazing also lays the foundation for a host of new capabilities we'll be delivering in the months and years ahead.

Check out the iMazing 3 teaser video for a quick look:

Here's a partial list of what's new in iMazing 3:

All-new interface that’s more responsive and easier to use than ever

New Home screen, which enables us to support many upcoming features

New Discover section, which guides users to popular features

New Tools section, with easy and clear access to iMazing’s main actions and other capabilities

Improved device storage & battery health details

Improved backup management

Light and dark modes, for both Mac and Windows

Future iMazing 3 features include:

Improved spyware detection

Automatic photos transfer from device to computer

New enterprise capabilities

New ways to access your data and manage your devices

New device support (it's a secret!)

And much more!

Importantly, iMazing remains a 100% native app on both Mac and Windows, and version 3 on both platforms will look and function identically. This requires considerable more engineering effort on our side compared to adopting a cross-platform framework like Electron, as many developers have done to streamline their coding, but there’s simply no replacement for the performance and functionality of native apps. We firmly believe in crafting the best software and experience for our users!

We expect to release the final version of iMazing 3.0 for both Mac and Windows early next year.

iMazing 3: FREE for everyone who purchased iMazing after October 2020

During the 15 years DigiDNA has been operating, we've continually tried to find the right balance between price and value while ensuring the sustainability of our operations.

Almost 3 years ago, we implemented a new licensing model that did away with paid upgrades. This decision was based on the continual development iMazing requires in order to maintain device, OS, and feature compatibility, and our desire to avoid forcing our users to choose between paying for an upgrade or relying on an outdated version of iMazing. It also allows us to deliver new features when they’re ready, instead of holding them back for a major release (we released 17 feature-adding updates to iMazing 2 over the years).

If you purchased iMazing after October 20, 2020, you either have a Subscription or a Device-based license, and iMazing 3 will be available to you at no cost.

Subscriptions inherently always have access to the newest release—typical across the software industry these days—while our Device-based license is a little more unique.

With iMazing's Device-based license, your license is linked to the Apple mobile devices you connect and use iMazing with, not your computer. This ensures that even with just a one-time payment (our Device-based licensing model), you will always be able to use the latest version of iMazing with your device.

iMazing 3: 50%-off for Legacy Licenses

If you purchased iMazing prior October 20, 2020, you have what we now refer to as a Legacy license.

Legacy license holders will need to purchase a fresh iMazing license in order to use iMazing 3, either a Device-based license or a Subscription.

As a token of our gratitude for their previous patronage and support, Legacy license holders are eligible to purchase any new iMazing license at half price!

A small note worth mentioning: with iMazing 2 having debuted September 2016, some customers have enjoyed using the software without any additional fee for as long as 7 years! We are truly committed to delivering good value for all iMazing users.

iMazing 2: One more year of updates

If you're not ready to upgrade to iMazing 3 immediately, you can rest assured that we will continue to maintain iMazing 2 for the duration of iOS 17's release schedule, which means iMazing 2 will work well with all of your Apple Mobile Devices until at least Fall 2024.

iMazing 2 users can expect a small compatibility update to arrive around the time iOS 17 is formally released, which will include support for the upcoming iPhone 15 models.

WWDC23 Wrap Up & Thoughts on Vision Pro

This 2023 edition of Apple’s developer conference will go down in history as one of Apple’s most significant product announcements. Even though spots were very limited to view the keynote in person at Apple Park, the excitement was palpable all around town in Cupertino before and especially after the presentation.

The volume and the magnitude of announcements were impressive, with numerous and innovative features like “NameDrop”, other AirDrop updates in iOS, and the push toward gaming in Sonoma for example. But the real star of the show was a major product release: Vision Pro. Completely new product line announcements don’t come often from Apple, and as much as this was rumored, it caught most observers off guard.

Whether one believes that what Apple calls a new computing platform (”spatial computing”) is effectively the dawn of a new era, or that Vision Pro is not going to become as ubiquitous as the iPhone, most were still very impressed by the device, or maybe more by the emotions the demos were conveying.

We are convinced adoption will grow over time, up to a significant share of Apple’s business. Ultimately spatial computing will be a thing. Not replacing desktop or mobile, but rather like the latter, adding literally a new dimension to it.

We anticipate future “non-Pro” versions, that will be cheaper and allow more people to be able to enjoy this new computer interaction. Maybe we’re overly enthusiastic about the product’s market altogether because we were in Cupertino that day, and Apple’s marketing hype has rubbed off on us…

PS: And yes naturally, count on us to be among the developers that will line up to get our hands on a development kit as soon as we can and enter the XR space!

Spyware Analyzer Improvements

In July 2021, we integrated Amnesty International's MVT open-source command line tool for detecting NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware on iOS devices into iMazing, providing users with a simple front-end to detect if their device might have been compromised....

In July 2021, we integrated Amnesty International's MVT open-source command line tool for detecting NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware on iOS devices into iMazing, providing users with a simple front-end to detect if their device might have been compromised.

Since then, iMazing's Spyware Analyzer has found between approximatively 20 instances of Pegasus-compromised devices. We wholly appreciate the trust users of these devices have placed in us, and we hope they remain free from any unjust prosecution or persecution.

During recent discussions surrounding the refresh of our website, we decided to build a page specifically for Spyware Analyzer. Previously, information about this feature only existed in a blog post announcing the feature.

The motivation at that time—just a couple months ago now—was to explain that in the 18 months since Pegasus gained notoriety, updates to iOS and iPadOS have greatly reduced the possibility of infection by Pegasus, as well as Predator, another spyware that was detected around the same time.

Predator was developed by Cytrox, a firm that ceased operations in 2019. NSO Group claims to no longer be selling its spyware to questionable groups, although it still very much remains in the business of offensive cyber tools: "Head of Israeli Cyber Firm NSO Group Reaffirms Company Commitment to Spyware,” The Wall Street Journal, 26 Jan 2023.

In other words, the utility of iMazing's Spyware Analyzer tool wasn't what it had been.

Or so we thought.

In recent weeks, others nefarious spywares have emerged: KingsPawn, and more recently Operation Triangulation.

KingsPawn was developed by a firm named QuaDream, which shut operations in April 2023, following the public disclosure of its spyware, which was first detected by Microsoft Threat Intelligence.

We have since updated the STIX files that iMazing’s Spyware Analyzer uses to detect KingsPawn. iMazing now scans for these instances of spyware on iPhones and iPads:

Pegasus from NSO Group (more info from Amnesty Tech)

Predator from Cytrox (more info from Citizen Lab)

KingsPawn from QuaDreams (more info from Citizen Lab)

Operation Triangulation from an unknown source (more info from Kaspersky)

Stalkerware and Watchware Detection

In addition, leveraging support from the community (Github), iMazing can now detect dozens instances of "stalkerware" and “watchware” running on a device. The full list of such products and services is exhaustive, and can be read here.

Unlike spyware, which is generally deployed clandestinely by government-affiliated groups against high-value targets, stalkerware and watchware apps are commercially developed and distributed. These products are often positioned as tools that enable parents to monitor their children, but can also potentially be used surreptitiously to monitor people without their knowledge or consent.

That said, we can’t underscore this important point enough: iMazing's detection mechanisms can trigger false-positives, so an indicator of compromise does not necessarily mean your device has been compromised.

Case in point: simply visiting mmspy.com in Safari (a benign interaction with a legitimate company, but one that develops watchware) will trigger an alert when iMazing's Spyware Analyzer scans your Safari data that your device might be associated with mSpy. If that is the only indicator of compromise iMazing reports, it’s unlikely that your device actually has mSpy installed on it.

It is therefore very important to remain calm and judicious with any flags that iMazing's Spyware Analyzer raises, and to investigate the legitimacy of any threat to you and your data.

We remain ready to review any results and provide high-level advice, if desired, just contact us.

Spyware Analyzer: Free Forever

DigiDNA is committed to providing the best tools for iPhone and iPad users to determine if their devices are compromised in any way. When we initially developed iMazing's Spyware Analyzer in 2021, we didn't expect this subject to still be relevant today, but the reality of the world is that it is remains as relevant as ever.

Out of respect for our belief in the fundamental right of individuals to privacy, we are happy to provide iMazing's Spyware Analyzer capabilities free of charge to the user community.

Since the start of the year, we’ve been working on the final minor release of iMazing 2, which also lays the foundation for iMazing 3, due later this year.

Version 2.17 is now available for download. This release introduces a host of small additions and user-requested features, including improvements in the following areas:

Spyware Analyzer: new module to analyze calendars, new indicators for various stalkerware apps and recently discovered spywares “KingSpawn” and “Operation Triangulation“. More details here.

Messages and WhatsApp: new Emojis introduced in iOS 16.4

WhatsApp: added support for "Disappearing messages" and "Communities"

iMazing Mini / Automatic Backups: new notification dialog to improve the user experience with the new iOS backup passcode prompt introduced by Apple in iOS 16.1 and above

Photos: export options are now saved, improvements when converting photos or videos

Music: added Play, Stop and other centralized media control keys and shortcuts for both macOS and Windows

Music: added new column Sample Rate, support for Comment tag and FLAC audio file artworks

iMazing Configurator: added a USB port number mapping feature and other new blueprint actions

iMazing CLI: various improvements

Other minor UI and stability improvements

Check out the complete release notes for macOS and for Windows.

iMazing 3 arrives later this year

We are targeting the release of iMazing 3.0 for the fourth quarter of 2023. We previously mentioned will be a free upgrade for everyone who purchased iMazing 2 after October 2020.

Our new bit of information to tease about iMazing 3: We are continuing to develop native apps for both Mac and Windows!

We considered moving to a unified platform like Electron to simplify engineering, as so many other developers have, but ultimately decided that none can meet the standards that we require. The result is that in addition to sporting a beautiful new user interface, iMazing 3 will be faster and more responsive than ever.

Please sign up if you are interested in beta testing iMazing 3 before its release!
